VIDEO: Harrogate Town hold Leeds United

Harrogate Town AFC held Championship club Leeds United to a 1-1 draw in front of a bumper crowd at the CNG Stadium on Friday night.

A combination of the balmy weather, the opening of a new stand, an expectant home crowd and bumper travelling support made for a superb atmosphere inside the ground.

Leeds United manager Uwe Rosler brought his first team squad for the first of Leeds’ pre-seaosn fixtures, and his stars were tested by Simon Weaver’s North Yorkshire outfit.

Cecil Nyoni scored for Town in the first half before Steve Morison levelled matters, but the scoreline was never likely to matter hugely for either side - these fans had come to see what lay in store in the season ahead.

And Town looked strong, buoyed by the high-intensity crowd, they were certainly a match for their illustrious oponents, proving a handful in the first half.

Naturally, Leeds piled on the pressure as the game wore on, but manager Weaver will be happy with his side’s guile in this draw.

Leeds’ new head coach Uwe Rosler, who took charge of Leeds for the first time at the CNG Stadium, gave non-competitive debuts to summer recruits Lee Erwin and Chris Wood before half-time.

Scotland and Leeds legend Gary MacAllister officially opened Town’s new Wetherby Road stand before kick-off, the stand already packed with fans before he was able to cut the tape.

Harrogate Town’s Managing Director Garry Plant said: “What a glorious night.

“There was a wonderful atmosphere in here tonight, and we’re proud to have the new stand open.”

Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino enjoyed proceedings.

He told the Harrogate Advertiser: “Harroagte is a lovely place to be. I have been for tea at Bettys - it is a lovely place for it, and my wife enjoys the jewellery shops around here.

“I am happy to be in Harrogate for the match.”
