Police appeal for witnesses to fatal A1 collision

A SERIOUS collision involving a car and an HGV on the A1 south-bound near Allerton Park has closed the carriageway.

Police were called to the incident at 8.30 this morning and are currently at the scene.

The south-bound carriageway is closed from junction eight and likely to remain closed for at least four hours, with a diversion in place along the A168.

The outside lane of the north-bound carriageway was also closed temporarily between junctions 46 and 48.

North Yorkshire Police are asking anyone that witnessed the crash to contact them by calling 101.

UPDATE - A POLICE update at 11am announced that the incident had proved fatal, with the male driver and sole occupant of the car dying at the scene.

Further details report that the silver car was stopped on the carriageway at the time of the collision, with the driver outside the vehicle.

Officers trying to establish why the man had left his vehicle are asking anyone who saw a stationary silver car and a man on the south-bound carriageway this morning to contact them on 101, selecting option 2 and asking for TC Steve Gardner.

The HGV driver has been arrested in connection with the crash.

The road is now not expected to reopen until this afternoon with diversions in place at junction 48 along the A168 and traffic rejoining the A1 at junction 48.

The northbound carriageway has reopened after being closed for a short period.
