Scarcroft Ladies Luncheon Club: the October lunch was held at the Scarcroft Village Hall, lunch prepared by Mary Fowler and her staff. Judith Oxer introduced the speaker, Dr Mitur Patel, who spoke about the wonderful work of HCPT, The Pilgrim Trust charity running Easter Pilgrimage holidays to Lourdes in the South of France. Each year HCPT take about 1,000 disabled and disadvantaged children on a weeks pilgrimage holiday, with volunteers from every walk of life. The background of HCPT, in 1956 Dr Michael Strode took four disabled children to the Shrine of Lourdes in the south of France insisted that the children be accommodated in hotels rather than hospitals. The biggest cost taking the children to Lourdes is the cost of chartered flights. Dr Patel takes children from Leeds, when there the children play games, make bracelets, and various crafts dressing up cinema visits. The cost of taking one child is £740, parents and helpers pay their own way. Lourdes is very busy at Easter, also night processions by torchlight. two groups go in the summer group leaders and medical professionals to help. Margaret Midgley gave a vote of thanks.
