Ripon runner set to take Olympic torch relay place

A RIPON marathon runner is to take part in the Olympic torch relay.

Lena Conlin has been offered a place in the torch relay on June 19, the day it passes through Ripon on its journey from Hull to York.

Lena, who works at Outwood Academy Ripon, was nominated for the honour by her sister-in-law for her work with young people.

She said she would be proud to represent the Ripon community by taking part in the historic relay.

As a volunteer youth worker at the Red Triangle Drama Group for 11-18 year olds Lena takes part in their St Wilfrid’s Parade entry every year, and has helped set up a junior section at Ripon Runners.

And after taking up marathon running only two years ago she has completed several runs to raise money for British Lung Foundation in memory of her father, Eddie Kimberley.

Lena is the second Ripon sportswoman to be offered a place in the relay.

Helen Mackenzie, who works as Director of Sport for schools in the Ripon area, is also set to carry the torch on June 19, although neither know for certain whether they will run their stretch of the relay through the city’s historic streets.
