A local painter’s beautiful picture of Kirkgate has been showcased by a new Ripon restaurant for its customer brochure.

Ripon artist Alan Matthews allowed La Brasserie restaurant to use his painting of Kirkgate for its menu launch and for leaflets distributed around the city.

Mr Matthews, 58, said the history of Kirkgate makes the painting stand out to visitors and residents alike.

“All the different colours on Kirkgate and the use of red in the painting make it a very pretty picture,” said Mr Matthews, who opened his gallery, Alan Matthews Watercolours, in Ripon 17 years ago.

Mr Matthews said he enjoys the freedom of working as a painter after a previous career as a primary school teacher.

“It’s quite interesting to see the way the view has changed over the years on Kirkgate and look back.

“I feel like I have been documenting the view over the years, superficially at least,” said Mr Matthews.

La Brasserie’s new owner and chef Nick Smith, 44, said the painting has generated lots of interest from his customers.

“There have been lots of comments from people about the painting and I think it fits well with the image of the restaurant,” he said.

“These are incredibly exciting times for us here.

“This is my first restaurant and so far the support from everyone has been extremely positive and we are really looking forward to a bright and busy Christmas.”
