A group of Ripon cyclists have conquered the first stage of next year’s Tour de France Yorkshire route – on the same date as next year’s race kicks off.

To mark one year to go until the Grand Départ in Ripon and its surrounding areas – including North and South Stainley, West Tanfield and Masham – the cycling team got a taste of what the likes of Bradley Wiggins will experience next year, as they rode across the scenic route.

“With a year to go until the Tour comes to Ripon, it seemed a fitting way to mark the event and help promote and raise awareness,” ride organiser Neil Dunkley, owner of Moonglu bike shop in Ripon, told the Gazette.

“The Stage One route takes in some fantastic scenery through the Yorkshire Dales and the riders took in some of the key climbs.”

A number of the team’s cyclists, including Neil, are also involved in the city’s Ripon Welcomes Tour de Yorkshire working group, which is appealing for more volunteers.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for everyone who lives in our beautiful city to help promote it and put it on the map for the future,” said Neil.
