Bedale High School teacher Martyn Coombs has been busy making reindeer for family and friends in the run- up to Christmas.

The idea came while visiting friends in Navan in Ireland in October while visiting Maguires Café on the Hill of Tara in County Meath.

His wife Lynne saw a hand-made reindeer for sale for 20 euros and said jokingly, that he could make one, such was his legendary DIY skills.

Coombs said: “Despite having every tool imaginable including a new chainsaw, I admit my DIY skills are worse than useless.

“Everything I attempt goes wrong. As a draughtsman, my dad’s motto was measure twice, cut once but mine had become measure once, cut a hundred times and then get a man in.

“Despite this dreadful pedigree in home improvements, I decided I would give it a go and surprised myself by how good the first one turned out to be. Once family and friends got wind of this, the orders poured in and I have now made 37 of the little blighters.”

Coombs was part of the Team Grayson which raised £42,000 last year for Prostate Cancer in memory of friend Steve Garbett. Along with five mates from Bedale, they completed the London to Amsterdam cycle ride and continue to raise funds locally for the charity. He hopes to raise an additional £200 from the sale of the reindeer.
