Budding sportsmen and women from across Hambleton have heard just what it takes to be an Olympian athlete.

Swimmer Chris Cook – a member of Team GB at both the Commonwealth and 2008 Olympic Games – spoke at the Hambleton Sports Awards which celebrated the achievements of 120 sports people.

It was the second time the annual awards, run by Hamilton District Council, have been held.

Awards were presented in twelve categories, including disabled sportsman, woman of the year, junior team of the year, and the Hambleton service to sports award.

“It was an honour to be in the presence of so many dedicated sports men and women,” said Coun Peter Wilkinson, Hambleton District Council’s cabinet member for health who presented the awards along with chairman of the district council, Coun Peter Sowray.

“It showed what a talented district we are – in a diverse range of sports. Hopefully in future international and national competitions we will see many of these people competing.”
