COMMUNITY leaders in Dewsbury have been reacting to the news that the West Yorkshire town will not be twinned with Harrogate.

The Harrogate Advertiser previously revealed that while a supposed plan had received support in Dewsbury - and made the front page of one local paper - Harrogate Borough Council knew nothing of the proposals.

Gerald Egan, of Dewsbury Means Business, said it was a particular blow since the idea had been raised during a visit to Harrogate by a Dewsbury delegation.

He said: “I’m disappointed because it was Harrogate who had proposed it.”

The Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Eric Firth, said: “Obviously, someone has been misled. It’s disappointing because it’s good to build relationships between towns.

“Regardless, the people of Harrogate will still be very welcome to visit our town and can expect a warm welcome when they do.”

Coun Pat Jones told the Advertiser last week: “We don’t understand why twinning has been brought up at all.

“Nothing is moving forward with it.

“In these troubled times, we wouldn’t be blasé and start spending money on twinning.

“At the council we are really desperate for money with redundancies. It’s not going to happen.”
