The final go-ahead has been given for a new Ripon cemetery north of the city centre.

Councillors gave planning permission for the site on Little Harries Lane, off Kirkby Road, to become a cemetery.

The current cemetery on Kirkby Road could be full within three years, council officials said, and the land around it is too wet to be safely used for burials.

Permission has now been granted for the first phase of work to start preparing a 2.2 hectare portion of the Little Harries Lane site for burials over the next 30 to 50 years.

The council plans for develop the rest of the site into a cemetery in coming years, including a wooded area for “green” burials and interdenominational burials.

Plans have also been approved for a small parking area on the site and storage cabin for maintenance and gardening equipment.

The site was first mooted as a possible cemetery as far back as the 1960s, and access roads which were laid out to allow it to be developed have since grassed over, the planning committee’s report said.
