Activities in Ripon to commemorate 1940’s Battle of Britain as part of Wings Week will culminate in a service at Ripon Spa Gardens on Sunday, September 14.

This week, members of the Ripon and District Royal Air Forces Association have been making their Wings Week collections in Morrisons in Ripon and Boroughbridge, and Ripon’s Booths and Sainsbury’s stores. They also have a full day’s collecting on Ripon’s Market Place on Saturday, September 13.

Sunday’s service in the Spa Gardens begins at 10am when the Mayor of Ripon, council and other civic and military representatives will be in attendance.

Personnel from RAF Leeming will provide an honour guard around the war memorial and a number of ex-serviceman Association Standards will be on a parade, supported by Ripon City Band and cadets from 886 (City of Ripon) Air Training Corps. The chaplain will be Canon Keith Punshon.

Following the service a contingent of personnel will march from the Spa Gardens to the cathedral for a commemorative service starting at 11.15am. The salute will take place on the square at 11am when, weather permitting, there will be a fly-past of Hawk aircraft from Leeming’s 100 Sqn.
