Some of Harrogate’s millionaires are among the richest people in Yorkshire according to the Sunday Times Rich List.
Five of the twenty richest people in Yorkshire live in the Harrogate district, with four of those sitting comfortable among the top ten richest people in Yorkshire.
Despite Sir Ken Morrison’s fortune dropping by £105m in the last year, his families £900m fortune still makes him the richest in the district and the fifth richest person in Yorkshire, down from third place last year.
The supermarket mogul who lives in a lavish French-style chateau near Boroughbridge, is the 110th richest person in the country.
Paul Sykes, who lives on the Studley Royal Estate outside Ripon ranks sixth in the Yorkshire Rich List. The multimillionaire made a fortune from the sale of Meadowhall shopping centre near Sheffield, and his Highstone property operation has further assets put at £253.7m.
Mr Sykes has a personal wealth of £650m and is using some of his fortune to bankroll UKIP’s advertising campaign ahead of next week’s European elections.
In 2013 he said: “I am prepared to do whatever it takes to propel UKIP to victory next year.”
Mr Sykes has helped to fund floodlights for Ripon Cathedral and donated £1m to the restoration of the landmark Royal Hall in Harrogate.
Terry Bramall and his family’s £425m fortune makes him the seventh richest in Yorkshire. The former chairman of the Doncaster-based Keepmoat construction ranked 241th in the UK.
Mr Bramall, who lives in Harrogate, also ranks third nationally in this year’s Sunday Times Giving List. The charitable millionaire has given a total of £107.4m to charity since he sold the Keepmoat construction group in late 2007.
The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation was set up in 2008 with a gift of £96m.
Internet entrepreneur Peter Wilkinson, who is from Harrogate, has increased his fortune by £25m to £360m in the last year, ranking 264th nationally.
Further down the list is car sales millionaire Tony Bramall, ranked 18th in Yorkshire and 448th in the country with an estimated fortune of £209m.
Harrogate millionaire Sir Robert Ogden dropped off the top twenty richest in Yorkshire list this year, despite maintaining his £150m fortune.
A spokesperson for The Sunday Times Rich List said: “Although he has sustained his wealth there have been a few new entries this year.”
The Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre at Harrogate District Hospital opened earlier this year thanks to a generous £3.5m donation from the property mogul.
