A HISTORIC church near Ripon has closed its doors for the last time.

St Peter’s Church in Dallowgill, near Kirkby Malzeard, hosted its final service on Wednesday, June 29.

The service was a Songs of Praise and fell on the Patronal Festival celebrating the church’s patron St Peter.

The church was first built and consecrated in 1842, and a formal announcement was made in the London Gazette in July 1844.

Burials in the churchyard at St Peter’s were stopped in the early 1950s to prevent possible contamination when Leeds City Water Works proposed building a reservoir at Dallowgill.

A small chapel of ease and cemetery was built and dedicated in its place on the side of the Laverton to Pateley Bridge Road in 1954.
