VISITORS to Markenfield Hall were treated to the sight of five new residents bobbing about on the moat.

Five healthy cygnets hatched the week before took to the water to greet the guests at the first tour of the year.

The black swans at Markenfield Hall have traditionally been named by the family, and have names beginning with the letter S, or with a C if it is pronounced as an S. The current pair are Sam and Cinders. But with five new arrivals to name, Markenfield’s owners, Lady Deidre and Ian Curteis and their staff are finding inspiration is running short.

So for the first time in the hall’s history the cygnets will be named by members of the public.

Lady Deirdre and Mr Curteis are asking for suggestions for the five new residents. Send your suggestion, along with your name and address to The Administrator, Markenfield Hall, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 3AD or e-mail info@markenfield.com. Suggestions can also be posted on the Markenfield Hall Facebook or Twitter sites.

The winner, or winners, will be chosen by Lady Deirdre Curteis and will receive a family ticket which will allow two adults and three children entry to the hall during the annual open days, which this year will be from May 6 to 19 and June 17 to 30.
