A MAJOR blaze has destroyed a row of shops on Northallerton’s High Street.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning, has completely destroyed a tattoo parlour, and severely damaged a neighbouring opticians and lawn mower repair shop in the town.
Firefighters from across North Yorkshire battling the flames and were joined by a crew from neighbouring force in Darlington. At its height, eight fire engines were on the scene.
It is thought the fire started in a building behind the high street, and spread to the row of shops by 1.45am. No one was in the building at the time, a spokesman for the fire brigade confirmed.
Fire crews had the flames under control by around 5am, and finally left the scene around 7am on Saturday.
Fire investigation officers and police were on site the day after the blaze, but the buildings were so badly damaged that work has had to stop until structural engineers have confirmed they are safe to enter.
It is still not yet known how the flames started.
