RICHMOND MP William Hague has spoken out over proposed controversial changes to children’s and maternity services at Northallerton’s Friarage Hospital ahead of a protest rally on Saturday, May 26.

The Foreign Secretary, who earlier this year joined the protest over the plans to move the services to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, issued a statement expressing his “deep concern”, ahead of the rally at County Hall, Northallerton where he is due to speak.

Also addressing the event will be star of The Dales Amanda Livingstone-Owen who says it is crucial services are kept at the hospital.

Critics say the move to James Cook Hospital would leave the Yorkshire Dales’ mothers-to-be with what will be one of the longest journeys to access key services in England.

Dr Vicky Pleydell, GP and shadow accountable officer for the Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “We are making every effort to speak with a wide-range of groups and individuals so that everybody has a chance to get their voice heard on this issue.”
