Boxing Day events cancelled as floods hit North Yorkshire

Police have closed roads and flood warnings are in place as heavy rain continues to fall across North Yorkshire.

The Environment Agency is warning of a risk of flooding in Knaresborough and the Upper Nidd area.

An Environment Agency statement read: "The current level of the River Nidd at Knaresborough is 1.9m.

"Further rain is forecast during Saturday which may cause levels to rise further.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely."

The following roads are affected

A59 in Blubberhouses - closed between Hardisty Hill and Parkinson's Lane junctions.

A61 Ripon bypass - passable between Boroughbridge Road junction and Ripley.

A61 Harewood - shut due to flooding at bridge.

The floowing events are affected

The Boxing Day meeting at Wetherby Races has been cancelled due to flooding at the racecourse.

The Boxing Day pilgrimage from Ripon Cathedral to Fountains Abbey has also been cancelled.
