A pumpkin so large it had to be taken to a public weighbridge as regular scales couldn’t take its 26 stone was the winner at a joint charity horitcultural night.
The Boroughbridge & District Horticultural Society and Boroughbridge Social Club Pumpkin Night saw the largest pumpkin ever entered into the event, weighing in at a massive 26 stone.
The monster vegetable, only the second ever grown by Oliver Moorey, took pride of place and first prize in the open category section of the competition.
But there were plenty of other quality entrants to the show held at Boroughbridge Social Club on Fishergate. Judges Ian Maltby, Boroughbridge Town Councillor and Chairman of the Boroughbridge Allotments Society, and his wife, Jan had a tough job on their hands.
Both said they were amazed at the quality and quantity of the entries and found it very difficult to decide on winners in the various classes.
It was a winning night for children at Happy Jay Nursery in Boroughbridge who had a triple win taking first and second place in the Best Looking Pumpkin class and third in the Ugliest Pumpkin section.
Nursery manager Andrea Proctor said: “We are very proud of the prizes we have won. The children have loved getting involved in growing the pumpkins and other vegetables in our outdoor area. We would like to say a huge thank you to Joan Pratt who has helped the children with the garden over the past year.”
Money raised from entrants and throughout the evening from a guess the weight competition, raffle and pie and peas super will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
