Ripon flies the flag for Diamond Jubilee

Ripon’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations start in earnest this weekend when the city will be decked in red, white and blue.

To honour the Queen’s 60 year reign. 100 Union Jack flags will be hung across the city tomorrow, Saturday, February 4, marking Her Majesty’s ascension to the throne on February 6, 1952.

The Market Square will also be decorated with traditional red, white and blue bunting and the town hall windows draped in the commemorative colours.

A Civic Service will follow at Ripon Cathedral on Sunday, February 5 at 5.30pm.

The following morning the city will be woken by a peal at the cathedral. The bell ringing service will take place from 8am and is expected to last for over half an hour, officially marking the start of the city’s year long celebrations.

Coun Andrew Williams, Chairman of the Diamond Jubilee Committee at Ripon City Council said: “Ever since ascending to the throne 60 years ago, Queen Elizabeth II has been a loyal servant to our country.

“In order to celebrate her successful reign, Ripon is keen to mark its gratitude and lead Britain in the spirit of celebration.”

The celebrations in Ripon will continue throughout the coming months with a calendar of events organised by Ripon City Council, Ripon Chamber of Trade and local organisations.

Schoolchildren will be signing a birthday card to send to the Queen and taking part in scheduled Skype sessions with other schools across the Commonwealth. Other key events scheduled for the Jubilee year include: Red, white and blue pancakes at this year’s pancake race on Shrove Tuesday, February 21.

Traditional May Pole dancing on Tuesday, May 1 in the Market Square.

And a Jubilee Celebration weekend on Saturday, June 2-Monday, June 4 will see a number of events, including a Major band competition at Ripon Cathedral.
