Dolls take centre stage at St Mary’s

A special exhibition of dolls will take place at St Mary’s Church in Thirsk later this month.

“Dolly Mixtures” will be open daily from Saturday, August 18 until Friday, August 31 from 10am to 4pm except on Sundays when it is open from noon to 4pm. Admission to the exhibition is free but donations to church funds are always welcome.

The exhibition will feature a large variety of dolls and associated items - baby dolls, fashion dolls, antique and modern, collector’s items and dearly loved companions from all eras.

Watch out also for some unusual exhibits - not at all what you may be expecting!

Margaret Hunton, St Mary’s Tourism Officer said, “We have played with the word doll and have come up with some variations on a theme so, if you remember the “Bear With Us” exhibition from a few years ago, come and see what our extensive research has produced and be prepared to groan at the puns!”

All visitors to the exhibition, young and old, are invited to bring a doll with them to meet the exhibits, begged, borrowed and specially purchased from far and wide. Those under 12, who bring their favourite doll could be going home with a treat!

Bear With Us brought over 400 bears into St Mary’s, how many Dolly Mixtures will there be in this packet?

Lunchtime visitors to the exhibition on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27 will be treated to an Organ Recital by David Jackson from 12.15pm - 12.45pm.

Admission to the recital is free but donations to the Organ Fund are welcome. There will also be home made refreshments and light lunches served in the crypt on this day as well as on Monday, August 20.
