ONE of the most distinguished country hotels in the district is redesigning its gardens – and is inviting the public to get in on the act.
Hob Green Hotel in Markington has already added a Golden Orchard, populated at present by 12 species of golden fruit trees.
The oldest is Plum Mirabelle de Nancy, origin France in the 1400s; the most local is the Apple Ribston Pippin – origin Yorkshire 1707 – and one still awaiting arrival is the Quince Serbian Gold, origin Serbia.
The purpose of the garden is to be a permanent celebration of golden weddings, and the hotel is inviting the public to help name six of the trees.
The six couples chosen will not only have the pleasure of naming a fruit-bearing tree, as a growing reminder of their life together but will also be entered in a prize draw.
Adrian Reeve, the head gardener, said "The redesigning of the gardens is a very exciting, but inevitably slow, project. So having the golden orchard is giving immediate guest interest, which is just what a gardener wants!"
People can enter by sending an email to Hob Green at info@hobgreen.com or by telephoning 01423 770031 stating their contact details and what the tree would be in celebration of.
The draw will be held on March 31.
