DOG owners are being warned they will receive an instant £50 fine if they are caught not cleaning up after their pets.
Since the turn of the year, reports to Hambleton District Council about dog fouling have rocketed and one-third of all requests for street cleaning services relate to the problem.

Although the problem is widespread, there are particular problems in Crakehall, Northallerton, Thirsk and Bedale – in Iddison Drive, in Bedale, 26 deposits had to be cleared in just one day.

"We will not tolerate this foul mess – it is the responsibility of the dog owner, or person in charge of the animal, to clear up deposits left by it," said John Proud, the council's Street Scene manager.

'danger'

"Dog fouling is not only unpleasant – it is a danger to public health and the people of Hambleton should not have to put up with it because of inconsiderate dog owners.

"We want them to think how they would feel if they got it on their shoes, their child's pram, grandma's wheelchair or – even worse – was picked up by their child."

The £50 fines can rise to up to £1,000 if the case ends up in court.
