GRAFFITI offenders paid their debt to society by spending a Saturday picking up litter.
The Northallerton Safer Neighbourhood Team, in partnership with Hambleton District Council's Street Scene, organised the clean up day as part of a programme aimed at getting offenders to face up to their actions.

The group of young offenders removed a large quantity of litter from the Ashlands Estate to make amends for the 73 offences they had committed between them.

strong message

PC John Trueman of Northallerton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "The activities of the group were very well-received by the local residents.

"We believe that preventing local youths from getting involved in graffiti is vital and days like this send out a strong message to deter potential offenders.

'robust approach'

"It is also a good way to try and ensure that those who are caught don't re-offend."

PC Trueman added: "In addition to this robust approach to dealing with offenders, Northallerton police, together with Street Scene, are producing a presentational pack designed to educate local youths about graffiti offences."
